Annotations for New Born

Lyric: [Instrumental Break]
Annotation:
Here, the “Showbiz-like” piano stops, and the Distorted (or overdriven, or even Fuzzed on Plug In Baby) tone that we all know kicks in.

Lyric: Just break the silence, ’cause I’m drifting away
 Away from you, ooh
Annotation:
More importantly, Matt feels the need to express these opinions because he feels like he’s drifting away from the one he loves the most

Lyric: Show me it’s real
Wasting our last chance to come away
Annotation:
Matt wants people to forge connections based on real-life interactions and hopefully break away from their technological dependence

Lyric: Destroy the spineless,
Annotation:
Matt wants nothing to do with those who blindly accept the new technological normal

Lyric: You can’t come down to earth
 You’re swelling up, you’re unstoppable
Annotation:
This phrase is a direct counterpoint to similar lines in Verse 1: The love for what you hide The bitterness inside Is growing like the new born This time, however, instead of holding onto individuality, Matt is describing the loss of individuality as a person becomes irreversibly more and more attached to the greater global technological collective

Lyric: How much are you worth,
Annotation:
This might be a call from Matt for us to reclaim our individuality, or it’s another warning about “losing yourself” in the technological tsunami

Lyric: Hopeless times to roam, the distance to your home
 Fades away to nowhere
Annotation:
Another critique about technological interconnectivity – time always seems to go faster when we’re engrossed in our machines, and for some people “home” is wherever there’s an internet connection or tech device; it allows us to create a comfort zone that we can get lost in for hours on end

Lyric: When you’ve seen, seen
 Too much
 Too young, young
 Soulless is everywhere
Annotation:
One of the challenges of technological interactivity is that with loads of information available to us we become desensitized and apathetic towards one another, even sometimes to the point where it seems like we have lost our souls

Lyric: The love for what you hide, the bitterness inside
 Is growing like the newborn
Annotation:
Matt hopes that our love for an individual and unique identity will help us combat the growing technological inter-connectivity of our world Hopefully not in an Ann Rynd way, though

Lyric: Link it to the world, link it to yourself
Stretch it like a birth squeeze
Annotation:
Technology is used to connect people all around the world, and has become heavily integrated into our personal lives – we have smartphones, tablets/e-readers, to say nothing of our laptops and desktop computers. The Internet makes communication instantaneous and practically non-stop. New innovations like Google Glass and its famous self-driving cars promise to push those links even further. But in doing so, Matt argues, we stretch our humanity in painful ways.
